Have you ever fallen into the trap of thinking God needs your help? We wait on the Lord for Him to work. We wait on Him in prayer. However, after time elapses, perhaps weeks or even months, we take matters into our own hands, get into pickle, then ask God to bless our mess.
God told Abraham in Genesis 12 that He would bless him with many descendants. Problem was Sarah was barren. So after many years Abraham went into Sarah’s maidservant Hagar and they had a child named Ishmael. For 13 years Abraham and Sarah thought this was the fulfillment of God’s promise. However, God appeared to Abraham 13 years later and said, “No, Sarah will have a son.” So when Abraham was 100 and Sarah was 90, she gave birth to Isaac, the son of promise. Of course the damage had already been done and the child of the flesh, Ishmael, had been born. The result: tension between Isaac and Ishmael’s descendants even to this day.
God doesn’t need my help. My role is to simply wait on His plan and obey. Failure to do so only births Ishmaels, works of the flesh that God can’t bless. Galatians 5:6 says, “If we walk in the Spirit we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.” May that be our goal today. To wait on the Lord. Trust in His plan and walk in the Spirit. |
